Find out how to spy on your competitors' ads easily
Google's Ads Transparency Center shows, for free, every ad an advertiser is running. Enough to see what your competitors do before spending a dollar.
Google publishes, for every verified advertiser, the list of ads it is running. It is public, it is free, and it opens in a browser: the Ads Transparency Center, at `adstransparency.google.com`.
What you find there
You search by advertiser name, by website or by topic. For each advertiser, the tool shows:
- the active ads and those run recently
- the format: text in search results, image on the Display network, video on YouTube
- the countries where they run
- the period each ad ran for
The same kind of tool exists at Meta, for Facebook and Instagram.
What it actually teaches you
Who buys advertising in your market. If three local competitors have been paying to show up for your service for months, it is working for them. If nobody is there, either the market is not decided on that channel, or you have open ground.
Which arguments they lead with. Price, speed, warranty, urgency. The text of an ad is the most worked-over version of their sales pitch — they paid to test it.
What lasts. An ad that has been running for eight months is a profitable ad. Nobody pays eight months for nothing. The ones that appear and vanish in two weeks were failed tests: you just saved yourself the test.
The landing page. The ad leads somewhere. Go and look: you will see how they structure their case, what offer they make, which form they use.
How to use it without copying
Copying a competitor's ad condemns you to being the less credible version of someone else. The useful exercise is the opposite: spot what everyone says, and say something else.
If all five competitors promise "fast service and competitive prices", the open ground is elsewhere: a specific guarantee, a stated turnaround, a specialty, regional coverage the others do not have.
Checking your own trail
Search for your own business in the tool. Two possibilities:
- you run ads: check that what is live matches what you think is live. Forgotten old campaigns, with an old price or an expired promotion, end up there.
- you do not: you will at least see who is buying ads on your business name. It is legal, it is common, and it is worth knowing.
The quarterly quarter-hour
Once a quarter, fifteen minutes: your three main competitors, what they are running, what has changed since last time. It is the cheapest market intelligence there is, and it requires no subscription.
